Estate sales and garage sales aren't the same
An estate sale usually clears a whole household, often run by a company that prices everything and staffs the sale. Expect furniture, kitchenware, tools and collectibles in every room, and sometimes a line at opening time. A garage or yard sale is usually the household itself selling what it doesn't want: smaller, cheaper, and more open to haggling.
Getting the most from a sale
- Go early on the first day for the best choice; popular estate sales can have a line before the doors open, and some hand out numbers.
- Go late on the last day for the best prices: many estate sale companies discount what's left.
- Bring cash, and ask before you go whether cards are taken. Bring a tape measure for furniture and a plan for getting big pieces home.
