Community garage sale days
Some cities and HOAs around the Bay Area hold their garage sales on the same day or weekend, once or twice a year. See the dates and how to take part.
Estate sales and garage sales aren't the same
An estate sale usually clears a whole household, often run by a company that prices everything and staffs the sale. Expect furniture, kitchenware, tools and collectibles in every room, and sometimes a line at opening time. A garage or yard sale is usually the household itself selling what it doesn't want: smaller, cheaper, and more open to haggling.
Getting the most from a sale
- Go early on the first day for the best choice. Some estate sales hand out numbers at the door, so check the listing for how entry works.
- Go late on the last day for lower prices, if the listing says prices drop then.
- Bring cash, and ask before you go whether cards are taken. Bring a tape measure for furniture and a plan for getting big pieces home.
- Check the listing before you leave. Times change and addresses are sometimes only released close to the day; each sale here links to its source.
- Plan a route when several sales are on the same day: save them, and the route planner orders them so you reach each one while it's open.
